I don’t know exactly when I started entering stores and feeling horror instead of “surprise & delight” but it feels like a permanent shift for me. And I thought I was alone in that feeling, but apparently not. Thanks for your sharp analysis and prolific (seriously, Amy, WTF!) writing.

Such an interesting read. The amount if waste is absolutely crazy. I'm not sure consumers care enough, we're so used to new, new, new. I've started buying pre-worn precisely because of the climate issue. Just sooo much stuff is produced...shameful really. Love your work btw!

I'm confused. How does having a runway show - where maybe, what 25? outfits are shown - create massive waste? what if the dept. store buyers only bought, like, 3 of each thing and the company made only that many. then there is significantly less waste. why do the racks need to be full? if only a handful of people have the money to buy these things, why not shift somewhat back to the model of making things to order? Probably won't make investors happy, but, well, idgaf about them, i guess?

deep down, I feel like the answer is for consumers (at all levels of the economic ladder) to stop tying their self-worth into being seen in "new" things... one would hope that the pandemic would have broken this habit, but apparently not?

Companies should produce less, people should buy less. Good luck with that …
