Olivia represents a weird space in modern feminist celebrity culture where she’s accomplished professionally but all the attention around her is still predominately focused on how hot she is and who she’s dating. This article spent several paragraphs dedicated to talking about her current relationship, her ex, and reiterating multiple times how attractive she is. They featured the DP of DWD in the article, but instead of talking about her directorial skills, he just commented on how ‘she hasn’t aged’. It’s really disappointing to see major 'quality' publications continue to present women in such reductive ways.

It truly does beg the question of what kind of business Vogue -wants- to be in.

The only reason she got the cover at this point is because of her proximity to Harry Styles. I hate to say it, but a lot of the reason why we've seen her everywhere is because she's in a pr relationship with Harry Styles for the movie. All of the pap photos of her wearing his merch are staged to garner more articles about how she's wearing his merch and supporting him, and it sucks because Booksmart was good and she is a great director. At the same time, it appears that she's reveling in the attention and fame that Harry has given her. Great piece and I share the same sentiments as you! It was a very weird article all around.

LOVED this week's letter, and shared it accordingly. It's such a shame and I've felt really discouraged by the state of things at the moment. How do you think publishers should be reinventing fashion media, or how do you think we can take back some of that control to refocus on quality content?

Vogue article simply reflects OW: cheap, uninspiring, mediocre. And regarding Booksmart, it's full of cliches from the late 80s and 90s school based comedy sitcoms that may look new to millenials but have been chewed and spat out a long time ago.

I guess if she didn’t want to talk about her personal relationship and “give it the attention” instead of speaking on her accomplishments, she should stick to her accomplishments. She speaks on whatever makes her relevant, and right now that appears (by what she chooses to speak about) to be Harry Styles. Many celebrities choose to keep their private relationships, well private, she doesn’t, because talking about Harry, who happens to be very much in the spot light right now coming off his US tour, is what makes her relevant, at the moment. She could showcase spending time with her children , but that’s not what keeps her relevant, waiting for her film to finally emerge, next year! Which also brings her relationship with Harry back into the forefront. Just me….?

You're literally liking Harry Styles conspiracy theorists' tweets on Twitter, FYI. Anything for encouraging engagement though, right?
