Thanks for sharing this insider's view of fashion journalism. Sadly, traditional media is dying and being replaced with overt agendas that work to promote particular political bents with a view to proselytize. Facts are no longer facts, apparently, which is gutting to anyone who works in journalism. It must be soul-crushing to know there are stories to be told which are getting lost in all the noise.

It's fascinating how when I do reporting for certain stories or a book I realize how much there is to uncover about a subject, and realize that the reason no one has uncovered it is because no one has asked! There are definitely a ton of stories not getting told.

while it is obvious at this point that there is a downward trend in traditional media, with a rise in nostalgia for print magazines as seen on tik tok as well as newspapers used for ad copy, is it at all possibly that this will translate into a resurgence in the industry?

Maybe the nostalgia boom will inspire people to start paying for magazine subscriptions again? Especially if you're old enough to remember them from the 90s-2000s. Last year, Hearst ran a really good promo on subscriptions and it encouraged me to sign up for two. It's such a thrill to get a magazine in the mail, I missed that feeling! And it's very chic and vintage (well, in my head anyway), to flip through a mag on an airplane. So I doubt print mags will come back, but perhaps more people will start subscribing to the ones still in circulation...

the way i see it potentially playing out is akin to the resurgence of vinyl and cassette in the music industry. but as my boyfriend pointed out, it’s still a limited market, a point that emmanuelle made above.

Such a great question! I feel a market for old issues can be a thing. I am not sure for new magazines because it is very costly, time consuming, and building an audience for print isn't easy at all nowadays with all the online and offline noise. Making the choice to have a print magazine today means being ready to lose money. It is a business that is done for the passion of doing it and the message one's wants to convey. It is certainly not to make money out of it, in my opinion. But I could be wrong!
