The chat created about Phoebe Philo was and still is fire, I keep coming back to it each time there is a new comment. It is eye-opening to see the variety of opinions with people making valid and smart commentary. The fashion industry and media want us to believe customers, people interested in fashion and even fashion professionals don't have an opinion because, after all, it is an industry favouring the glorification of fashion designers and the people at top positions (sometimes it eerily feels cult-like) but I am glad to read people proving it is the opposite. Ah and by opinion, I mean having a critical mind where they're able to see the pros and the cons, something that has been lacking for a while on the internet, but not only.
The frenzy over this felt very top-down, very old school. Like "we are Fashion People and we will tell you What Is Good." I think that works less well in the age of TikTok, when anyone who can make a compelling video review of any collection can go viral and have influence. And more forums that the industry can't control (like this newsletter) are going to continue to sprout up as the internet evolves.
The next drops will really determine if this frenzy was worth it. One collection/drop isn't enough to give a critical point of view (eventhough we will always have one anyway haha), especially when she now has her brand.
Since media institutions keep on losing influence, and influential voices are going independent and building their own community, I am wondering if the figure of THE fashion designer à la Phoebe Philo will withstand the strength of time.
Glad most feel the same way I did upon scrolling. I thought I was missing something. I’m not sure what I was expecting but I found it incredibly expensive and was underwhelmed by most of it.
For sure. I also think in the years she’s been “away,” a lot has changed and evolved in fashion. So, to me, some of it felt outdated which is likely what got me to feel underwhelmed.
I think the one thing that stands out to me is that generally with luxury goods, I always thought that part of the appeal was that the stores curate a certain experience - you go to the store, you get free wine and snacks, you get fawned over by an attentive salesperson. You have, for lack of better work, a *mystique* about the experience that's a step up above getting things off the rack at Macy's. I know you CAN buy Gucci or Prada online but...why would you?
But here the experience is basically the same as Shein or any other online-focused/exclusively online brand, where you don't get any of the experience, just hurry up and check out before it sells out. The experience seems quite subpar though clearly the goods are selling all the same.
I really loved the black squares sunglasses but they were sold out. Probably just as well as they were expensive. I mean the collection is ridiculously overpriced & it made me laugh how many fashion people were fawning over it. I’d love that rope neck top & hope COS do a version of it ha!! But I mean those bags....like who cares?!?! This is definitely a collection for a tiny minority of skinny people. How utterly boring & I evolved.
Brava! Can’t add much more than what others have said. I deeply admire PP. Was looking forward. Was not expecting it to be priced fairly. Was getting ready to talk myself into over spending and found it to be so Meh. At first I felt like a curmudgeon contarían but have been grateful for voices like yours. Honestly... I think it may become cringe to flaunt this collection. Like you didn’t know that it actually wasn’t cool.
I’m still processing....and still think I might go back for the sunglasses or the brooch...I definitely didn’t love everything, but I’m invested in PP’s vision of quality clothes + and the attitude around them...it really does inspire me...
Why did I think the necklace said MuMu though 😂
hahaha
I thought the same, too!! I'm glad I'm not the only one to have misread it... I also think that the font of it is really ugly .

Agreed!

She had a lot of hype to live up to

Couldn't agree more, I was completely underwhelmed even before I looked at the prices

I feel confident places like Cos, Zara are gonna be knocking this off in a week or two...

Yes, definitely Zara. Cos are more individual but there’s a similar minimalist vibe
