Devil Wears Prada is, hands down, my favourite movie of all time. At first glance, you might think this is just a fluffy piece of nonsense. Until you watch it. And watch it again. There are so many layers around self-discovery, values, relationships. The writing is so crisp and the characters so well developed. And, it never ages. It's just as good in today's context. *chef's kiss*

I'll never forget seeing this movie for the first time. I was an assistant at a fashion magazine at the time, so it felt so relevant to me and in the culture. And I saw it in a packed theater in Provincetown with a bunch of other gays -- it was electric and so fun, with everyone reacting together to the scenes in real time. One of the most fun memories I have to this day.

For some reason I had to go see it in the theater for the first time by myself when it came out (maybe I was covering an event as a lowly party reporter? I can't totally recall). And I just remember being completely entranced the entire movie.

Wild to think this movie came out in the summer of '06! Was just a few months shy of leaving my role at a big luxury fashion brand (a few designs were even featured in the film) and it hit so hard. Everyone I worked with for the next two years (I went from fashion to interiors/home) ran around saying "That's all..." as a response to pretty much everything. Actually, we still do.

When this came out, I was working at the law firm in the Condé Nast building in Times Square. These were well-compensated attorneys, but you could still always tell who was a stylish Condé Nast person and who was not. I once saw Anna in the lobby and she gave me a very small smile; of course I was having a bad hair day, but thankfully was wearing my favorite Nanette Lepore dress.

And funnily enough, my prior career had been a copywriter at a cosmetics company where a few people in my department had been at Vogue (and I think were not as thrilled to be where we were all working). This was my least happy work environment — people were far meaner to each other than any other place I’ve ever been.

The movie still holds up and I still love it! But I think Andy’s friends kind of suck. They’re all giving her so much grief about working hard!

For the record: the very small smile from Anna to me felt like “yes, it’s me and yes, your hair does look bad” (which it did).

I'm late to the party, but just wanted to share how much my mother LOVED this movie. Frasier + Doc Martin + The Devil Wears Prada were her go-to comfort-watches for years. I'm pretty sure it was on a few days before she died. What a great interview with Aline. Always fascinating to learn more about how the creative process. Thanks, Amy!
