Monse Had to Do Lauren Sànchez's Space Suit
Watching the Blue Origin girlboss space flight was painful. But fashion brands need to be where the rich people are.
A red carpet used to be enough. You know, having a professional pick out someone’s gown and jewels in order for them to be aptly admired walking from their chauffeured car to a venue. That was one way we knew who was rich, Chosen — different from you and me.
Well, those days are behind us. Today, going to the Met Gala is no longer enough.
Now, rich people have to undertake much more lavish and theatrical stunts to let us know that they don’t ever have to fill their own gas or unpack their own groceries or struggle to pay for daycare. Such as: joy rides into space! Look at them. They are doing their makeup for the occasion!
“Who would not get glam before the flight?!” Sànchez told Elle before the trip.
Media about the this brush with the beyond was unavoidable Monday. Like the Eras tour. Truthfully, I got sucked into Sànchez’s space flight the minute she announced on CNN in 2022, in her first joint interview with her fiancé and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, that she planned to go to space with “a great group of females.”
She eventually revealed the roster: CBS anchor Gayle King, pop star Katy Perry, activist Amanda Nguyen, producer Kerianne Flynn, and aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe. (I’ll be the one to say it: not bringing Sandra Bullock was a real missed opportunity.) And over the weekend, we learned what they were wearing: custom Monse jumpsuits in blue (as in Origin) that zipped up the front with a kick flare. One small step for man, one giant step for glam.
Because that’s what this space flight was all about. Glam. Branding. Looking hot. Taking videos for social media. Some people are offended that Monse participated in this deeply cringe stunt.
