Hi Amy, I’m about halfway through Gwyneth and I can’t put it down! I really appreciate how nuanced it is; it’s given me deeper insight into who she is way beyond anything I’ve read about her before. I noticed that Call Her Daddy re-released their interview with her the other day, which I immediately listened to as I didn’t listen to it the first time. And I felt so put off how both Gwyneth and Alex Cooper were fawning over Brad Pitt, knowing the allegations of abuse against Angelina Jolie and their children. And in your book you mention there may have been emotional abuse in Gwyneth’s and Brad’s relationship. I just wonder why Gwyneth would still be fawning publicly over him. Maybe she knows her connection to him- how iconic they were as a couple-plays well with a lot of women. And it will generate a lot of headlines for her. Anyway, all that to say is that I’m so glad you wrote a book about her; I’m not a fan of hers or Goop, but I find the public discourse about her, and how she crafts her image, fascinating.
i do not have social media, i get all my “news” from the nytimes/vanity fair/wsj/the daily beast and local business journals. PLUS documentaries and great streaming series’ !!!
while i don’t care enough about gwyneth to read your book (i am purely a fiction reader- don’t take offense). i was thoroughly enchanted by the interview you gave on the beast! i loved cosmo back in the day;)
i have thoughts about her motivations.
okay. i literally quite disliked her since the 90’s. then, goop came and i abhorred her! you helped explain why that happened and it completely made sense.
however!!! for me. the tides of my humble opinion of her turned when i watched her trial on court tv.
she’s super rad.
i also think she’s super competitive.
i believe that when her cousin married that lunatic (sorry!) who started WEWORK, and became wealthier than her (even being talentless) it drove gwyneth to ‘show her’ and the world what talent truly is.
again… just my humble thoughts and tiny opinion on the matter.
I am very much looking forward to reading this! I’ve been down with GP since her indie days. I was an early subscriber to the original Goop newsletter, but I lost track of it after goop became GOOP. I think she is infinitely interesting, as most polarizing women are. I’m looking forward to your well-researched look at GP. In many ways, I think you skillfully walk in the same lane of my favorite historians-Doris Kearns Goodwin et al: you have a skill for contextualizing your subjects (even yourself in Tales From the Back Row), into the bigger cultural landscape and zeitgeist. Advanced congrats on book 3. I’m intrigued who will get the Odell treatment next!!
already bought the ebook, am completely swamped at the moment, but looking forward to reading the book! Can I make a bald-faced confession right here? I've never seen any movie that had Gwyneth Paltrow in it except for Iron Man. As a video store manager once remarked to me, as I paid him for two days worth of samurai movies, You're the only woman I know with no time for chick flicks.
